I was personally elated after reviewing the bid from Matt Goddard of Poetry In Stone. The experience and knowledge was more than solid, but what impressed me most was the personal integrity and expressed passion for the project. It is one thing to have someone fulfill a contract, but to have someone care and share a genuine passion in the importance of a project with what would have historical significance is priceless.

Matt’s experience with materials, explanations, drawings, permitting, codes, and in this case documentation was beyond my expectations. At one point the project became what others and I deemed a bureaucratic nightmare. Things continued to come together through Matt’s diligence and dedication to the project and the obvious pride in what he does. If we had chosen anyone else for this project it would probably never have been completed. Matt’s efforts went above and beyond to see the project through to completion.

Matt Goddard is a phenomenon. Not only is his work stunning, but he is an amazing human being. We had the pleasure of Matt's company for several months as he meticulously crafted a wall outside our NE Portland home. From the onset we were partners in the process: Matt was so concerned with meeting our needs that he involved us in the selection of stones and built a mock-up before beginning work. During this long process Matt showed great respect for our property and left the job site each day in fine condition. Matt's devotion to art, the quality of his work, and his integrity are truly remarkable.

When we hired Matt to design and build a wall in our backyard, we weren’t sure what we were getting into. After several weeks of watching our yard being transformed all of our expectations were surpassed. Not only do we have a structurally sound and beautifully designed wall, we have a stunning, one-of-a-kind work of art. Along with all his helpers, Matt was always professional, courteous and friendly. He is a meticulous craftsman who is committed to the highest quality work.

We selected Poetry in Stone to build our stone wall and walkway after being impressed by seeing past work and also by Matt’s professional demeanor in providing an estimate. His willingness to listen to our vision and then make suggestions using his professional knowledge and artistic views was a great combination. Watching the daily progress was fascinating. Matt and his crew were always on time, worked enthusiastically and cleaned up the work site at the end of every day. We were left with a beautiful wall and stone walk that gets compliments by friends and passers-by – and will continue to for the next 100 years or so. We view the end product as a sculpted piece of art!

We wanted a rock wall. We got so much more. We got a materpiece.

Matt has our highest recommendation. We cannot think of another contractor with whom we were more satisfied. Matt is an artist and craftsman who cares as much or more about the quality of his work than his clients do. We also appreciated the effort Matt made to keep us informed during every step of the process. Stone work is not cheap, but Matt was worth every penny we paid him and more!

Working with Matt was one of the most enjoyable projects our family has completed at our home.  His Old World craftsmanship is like no others I have seen in the modern Northwest territory.  His pain staking commitment to making everything just perfect showed in every detail.  He was never interested in just finishing the job to make a quick buck…he was interested in making something that people would enjoy for a lifetime and something even he could be proud of.
